Picket FRIDAY NOON at Irish Consulate for Irish POW Noel Maguire
MARCH 30, 2007
CHICAGO

The Irish Freedom Committee will picket the Irish Consulate in Chicago FRIDAY MARCH 30, 2007 from Noon to 2:00 PM to protest the continued refusal of the Irish government to repatriate an Irish citizen, Noel Maguire, from a British jail to one in Ireland. This refusal to grant an Irish citizen the humanitarian provisions guaranteed under the European Convention is tantamount to cruelty.

+++++++++++++ March 30, 2007 - International Day of Action for Noel Maguire +++++++++++++

WHO IS NOEL MAGUIRE?

Noel Maguire is an Irish citizen who has been held in a British jail since 2001. Seven other Irish political prisoners, previously held alongside him, have all been repatriated to serve their sentences in Ireland. Noel is the only Irish political prisoner still incarcerated in an English jail.

Noel has applied to be repatriated to Ireland, to serve the remainder of his 22-year sentence in an Irish jail, where he can be closer to his family and his two small children, who he has not seen in six years. His right to be repatriated is guaranteed under the European Convention on the Transfer of Prisoners and by virtue of his Irish citizenship. This Internationally recognized humanitarian right allows prisoners to serve their sentences in their country of origin, to be closer to their families.

For six years, Noel has requested to be repatriated to Ireland. Repeatedly, the Department of Justice in Dublin has refused his right. The last of Noel's co-accused were finally repatriated to Ireland in December 2006; one of whom, Aidan Hulme, suffered gross medical neglect throughout his long internment at Belmarsh prison. While in Full Sutton prison Noel has been held in isolation, and was recently brutally attacked in his cell. He is now living in fear for his life. As Irish Americans, we cannot see how the Dublin government can deliberately continue to endanger the life of an Irish citizen.

Noel is not seeking special treatment, just that his application for repatriation be given a fair hearing by the Department of Justice.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Please PHONE, FAX, E-MAIL or WRITE to the Consulate General of Ireland today. A sample letter and contact information is linked below. Please ask that the Irish Consulate record your message of concern for the safety of a passport-holding Irish citizen. Ask that the Irish government repatriate Noel Maguire immediately to serve his sentence in Portlaoise prison, Ireland, where he has small children and family living nearby. It is cruel to continue to deny two young children the humanitarian right to visit their father.
