http://www.irishfreedomcommittee.net Irish Freedom Committee NewsList Sunday, October 19, 2008 Hell in a Lithuanian Jail Irish republican POW Michael Campbell It has been nine months since Lithuanian authorities arrested and imprisoned Michael Campbell, brother of Irish republican ex-POW Liam Campbell, and left him to a hellish existence in a Vilnius prison. He has been held the entire time with no charges. During the duration of his internment, his family has been prevented from visiting him. A family member who traveled to Lithuania from Ireland to attend a court hearing in his case was removed from the courtroom. Michael is also barred phone contact with his family and loved ones, and has only been able to keep contact with them in a few letters home. Over the entirety of the past nine months, no-one has been allowed see Michael but his lawyers. The situation in which he is being held is appalling. Irish prisoners' welfare activists tell us: "He is being held in a cell with three other prisoners, none of whom speak any English and who spend their time smoking drugs. Michael has to keep his head at a broken window to get fresh air. The only toilet is a hole in the ground. The prison food is inedible and the conditions under which he is being held are appalling." A picket will be held by prisoners' welfare activists on November 1st at the Lithuanian embassy in Dublin - "Individual and organisational Banners and Placards are welcome."
